Tal Chappar - The land of Raptors and Blackbucks, November 2024
Day One: The Journey Begins, Exploring Self.
Sometimes, life gives you a gentle nudge—or a firm shove—out of your comfort zone. For me, it was a question that echoed in my mind as I contemplated this trip: *Am I living for myself, or am I simply living as others expect me to?*
That question became the turning point. I realized that happiness, for me, isn’t found in fulfilling expectations but in moments of solitude, surrounded by nature. When it’s just me, the open road, and the serene company of the natural world, I feel a deep sense of purpose. No masks, no roles to play—just *me and myself*.
This was my first solo drive to Tal Chappar, a haven for raptors and the graceful blackbucks of Rajasthan. The plan had been in my mind for months, but the thought of driving 400 kilometres alone always made me defer it. This time, though, I broke free of hesitation.
My day started early—before my alarm even buzzed. Restless and excited, I began my morning ritual of a quick bath, a small puja, and a moment of grounding. By the time I was on the road, it was earlier than planned. I fuelled up *GAJRAJ*—my beloved car, a giant on the road yet nimble and firm—and started my journey.
The roads shifted as I drove: from bustling cityscapes to lush green fields, winding mountain paths, and eventually the golden patches of desert. Each change brought new life to the journey, but just before reaching my destination, I slowed down for a moment that took my breath away.
A Grey Francolin crossed the road ahead, followed by six or seven tiny chicks. Their delicate forms were almost lost against the landscape, and I stopped in awe. As they hesitantly waddled across the road, I felt both admiration and worry. The road wasn’t empty, and I couldn’t bear the thought of any harm coming to them. I stayed until the entire family had safely crossed—a simple, beautiful moment that reminded me why I cherish these trips.
By one in the afternoon, I reached the homestay and was warmly greeted by Atul, my host. He showed me to my room, a cozy and comfortable space that felt like an extension of the natural beauty outside. After a brief rest, I joined him for lunch. The meal, a spread of simple local delicacies, was extraordinary. The freshness and homely flavors left me satisfied and completely at peace.
After lunch, it was time to plan my first exploration. My focus was on the Demoiselle Cranes, migratory birds that grace Rajasthan during this season. Known for gathering in massive flocks, they are a spectacle to behold. I was eager to capture them in their element, especially during the golden light of sunset.
We headed to Sujangarh, venturing off-road to find their haven. As we arrived, the sight was mesmerizing—huge flocks of these elegant birds filled the landscape, their black-and-white plumage stark against the earthy desert tones. The air was alive with their trumpeting calls and croaking sounds, creating a symphony of nature.
I thanked *GAJRAJ* for making it through the rugged terrain and set up my camera. Time seemed to melt away as I captured the cranes in their world. Flights, graceful walks, quenching their thirst, and playful interactions—all played out before my lens. As the sun began to set, the flocks took to the sky, their synchronized movements painting patterns against the evening hues.
By the time I returned to the homestay, exhaustion was setting in, but so was gratitude. It had been a long day, started at four in the morning, but the memories I had gathered were worth every bit of effort. I relished the delicious dinner waiting for me and took a moment to reflect on the day. My heart was full, and my next subject was already in sight as I made a quick plan for tomorrow.
With that, I called it a day, letting the peace of Tal Chappar envelop me as I drifted to sleep.
