My changing beliefs as Coach

In my last blog I had said that when your beliefs become bigger than what they should be, you need to let them go. I also said that we need to let go of things that stop us from being free to look at things with new perspective. The impact of carrying things in us and making it a part of us keeps us away from the possibilities that are there at that moment.

Beliefs are of two kinds, ones that are limiting and ones that are empowering. Beliefs that elevate our self-image are our empowering beliefs. These beliefs help us accept the change happening around us and helps us participate in the change. As we open up to these beliefs, we experience new possibilities, new opportunities, new potential and creativity.

The beliefs that limit us, root from our insecurities. These insecurities tend to grow within us over the years as a result of our experiences, the unpopular ones. Beliefs are also shaped up by people around us.

When I was young I used to hear my elders say ‘Lie that is said to save others is not a lie’. With time, ‘saving others’ became equivalent to not hurting others’ feelings. If I disagree with their opinions, will I be accepted? Acceptance became more important than anything…these became my changing beliefs.

Is answer more important than the method?

The journey of Coaching has helped me find the method to the answer and not the answer itself. I think I have found my golden axe to sharpen my thoughts and the methods of finding the answer.

  4. I am not the body, I am not even the mind"
What helps me greatly in opening doors to many mysteries in my personality is self observation and Introspection. Its an interesting game to observe yourself in action and truly discover what is driving one's behavior in a certain environment. How much of the trigger is external to us and how much lies with in us. How the foundations of those triggers ( beliefs) are so deep that we start identifying ourselves with them and somewhere these beliefs start defining us.
In fact these beliefs are nothing but the baggage we have collected on the journey of life, they are not ME.
Like everything else in this world these too are not permanent. Each one of them helped us to cope with a situation at that time when they had started taking root in our minds. Its like that favorite toy, lucky pencil or favorite blanket which helped us in our childhood to cope with so many situations. Many of them are long gone and some of them lie dormant and some day come flooding back to us on the waves of nostalgia. With a smile we meet them like meeting a lost friend and after a brief chat keep going on our respective paths.
Its introspection which helps us to chart out our path and allows us to choose such companion beliefs which will serve us well to face the challenges of life. Process is as natural as the passage of time as long as we are alert and are ready to see!
Thank you Tapas for sharing this note it helped to think. I believe you as a coach are teaching , among other things, people to introspect and observe which will help them greatly to find their own solutions.

  5. Thought provoking!

Self limiting beliefs for the owner only show their true nature in hindsight. In the moment, and by ones own self- it is not possible to recognize the inhibiting impact.

Every belief needs examination for expiry dates...
